GAME TOOL / 05
Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator
Enter your Overworld coordinates to get the matching Nether spot — or the other way around. The tool also shows the portal search box and where the game would spawn a new portal, so two portals link cleanly both ways.

How the 8:1 conversion works
One block travelled horizontally in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld, which is why Nether tunnels are the fastest way to cross a map. The conversion touches X and Z only: divide by 8 going down, multiply by 8 coming back, and leave Y alone. Rounding always goes down toward negative infinity, so Overworld x=-30 converts to Nether x=-4, not -3.
When you step into a portal the game computes this converted point, then searches for an existing portal around it. In the Nether the search box is ±16 blocks (3×3 chunks); in the Overworld it's a much wider ±128 blocks (17×17 chunks). The closest portal by 3D distance wins; if the box is empty a new portal spawns within ±16 blocks of the converted point.

Frequently asked questions
How do Overworld and Nether coordinates convert?
Horizontally it's 8:1 — divide X and Z by 8 (rounding down) when going to the Nether, multiply by 8 coming back; Y stays untouched. The rounding goes toward negative infinity, so -29.5 ÷ 8 = -3.69 becomes -4, not -3.
Why did my portal drop me somewhere else?
Portals link to the closest one in range. Going to the Nether, the game searches ±16 blocks (a 3×3 chunk area) around the converted point; returning to the Overworld it searches ±128 blocks (17×17 chunks). A closer portal inside that box steals the link; with none in range it builds a new one.
How do I force two portals to link reliably?
Note the Overworld portal's X and Z, divide by 8, and build the Nether portal by hand at that spot — as close to the converted point as possible and always within ±16 blocks. Reverse for the trip back: multiply the Nether portal's coords by 8 and build there.
Does the Y coordinate matter?
Y carries over unchanged and the search spans the full map height, but “closest” is measured in 3D Euclidean distance — a portal at a very different Y can outrank one that's nearer on X/Z. Keep both portals at a similar height.
Where does a new portal spawn if nothing is in range?
The game looks within ±16 blocks horizontally of the converted point for a spot that fits a portal; failing that, it forces one at the ideal X/Z with Y clamped into legal height (about 118 and below in the Nether). That can mean a cave or a mid-air ledge — building by hand keeps it predictable.
Is Bedrock Edition the same?
The 8:1 conversion is identical, but Bedrock (mobile/console/Windows 10) handles the link search differently than Java Edition. Building exactly on the converted coordinates is the safest approach on either version.
